Political Situation in Bangkok- TCEB Update 7 November 2013

Demonstrations to oppose amnesty bill in Bangkok are currently taking place at three locations- at the Democracy Monument on Ratchadamnoen Klang Avenue, PhanFa Bridge on Ratchadamnoen Nok Avenue and Uruphong Intersection on Rama VI Road.

The demonstrations have been peaceful, and apart from some inevitable increase in traffic congestion, daily life and business in Bangkok continue as usual. MICE venues and popular tourist attractions in Bangkok and throughout the country are unaffected. The demonstrations also have not affected other MICE destinations such as Chiang Mai, Phuket, Khon Kaen and Pattaya etc. The gatherings for corporate meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions can be conducted as usual.

All airports throughout the country are also operating as normal, including Suvarnabhumi International Airport and Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok. Road and rail routes into Bangkok and other provinces are operating on schedule, including tourist destinations southeast and southwest of Bangkok such as Pattaya, HuaHin, KohSamet and Koh Chang.

In order to ensure safety and security, the Thai Cabinet has invoked the Internal Security Act in three districts of Bangkok – Dusit, PhraNakhon and Pom Prap Sattru Phai or areas surrounding the Government House and Parliament – until 30 November 2013. The Act gives police increased powers should any incident occur to maintain law and order, but does not restrict peaceful and legitimate demonstration or movement of people.
